Primary Three, Autumn Term - information for parents.
Literacy
Reading - Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cat (non-fiction)
Reading will be heard every day in class. Focus will be on increasing understanding of the text while practising reading strategies as well as fluency and expression. Children will also complete Guided Reading in class with their teacher weekly using non-fiction books. Children should also be encouraged to read library books at home.
Spellings
Spellings will start from 2nd September but formal written spelling homework on will only begin on 16th September and will follow the Linguistic Phonics scheme which is used throughout the school. Children will have spelling homework each night which they complete in their books and revision of all spellings for self-assessment on Friday. Specific details of each night’s homework will be found inside the front cover of their spelling homework book.
Comprehension
Comprehension activities will be picture comprehension mainly with discussions about the pictures and children will answer questions. Children will also complete activities relating to their reading books weekly.
Grammar and punctuation
- Capital letters and full stops
- Writing questions (using question marks and questioning words)
- Revision of the alphabet and putting words into alphabetical order
- Rhyming words
- Vowels and consonant (using a and an)
- Introductions to nouns & verbs
Creative writing

Number facts homework will be set each night, as detailed in the weekly timetable sent home and should be learned for a daily test, including a large test on Friday. The Number Fact booklet should be used to learn what is set each night.
World Around Us
Topic- Let’s Celebrate/Myself
Areas to be covered in the Autumn term will be-
- Myself- the human body
- Celebrations around the world
- My Environment (including mapping skills)
- Autumn festivals and celebrations
P.E.
Please make sure that your child brings his/her P.E. kit in a bag to school on Monday each week. All clothing should have a name tag and if your child has long hair, it needs to be tied back for PE. Pupils will be changing into their kit in class every Monday and Tuesday for P.E. then the kit will go home every Friday to be washed.
Other information
Jewellery – for Health and Safety reasons the only jewellery allowed to be worn by children is a watch and this must be removed before all P.E. activities.
Water – we recommend that children bring a bottle of water with a pull up sport cap to school each day to drink during class.
Break - A plain yogurt

Mini cheese
Plain pancakes/scones/crackers - buttered/ unbuttered
Dry cereal - no chocolate or sugar-coated e.g. Cheerios
Sandwich - healthy filling
Homework- all homework activities must be checked by a parent or guardian each night.
