Primary Six     Autumn Term - Information for Parents          

Literacy

Reading - Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cat

Reading will be heard on a regular basis in class.   Focus will be on increasing understanding of the text while practising reading strategies as well as fluency and expression. Children will also participate in weekly Guided Reading lessons using Collins Big Cat texts. Children should be encouraged to read at home where possible.

 

Spellings

Spellings will start on Monday 2nd September but formal written spelling homework will begin on 16th September and will follow the Linguistic Phonics scheme which is used throughout the school.  Children will have spelling homework each night to be completed in their Linguistic Phonics book.  Specific details of each night’s homework will be found inside the front cover of this book. Pupils will revise all spellings on a Thursday night for assessment on Friday.   

 

Comprehension

Comprehension activities will be based on reading texts and answering questions about them.  Full sentence answers are encouraged. 

 

Writing

Writing lessons are on a Thursday.  During this term, children will be studying the areas of biographies and poetry.

Numeracy 

  • Numbers to millions
  • Number sequencing to millions
  • Number names, ordinal numbers
  • Place value, comparing and ordering
  • Estimating and rounding numbers
  • Doubles and near doubles
  • Addition involving 3 and 4 digit numbers
  • Subtraction – mental subtraction involving 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers, written subtraction
  • Line Symmetry
  • Area
  • Length
  • 2D Shape – properties
  • Time – reading and writing times, durations
  • Data Handling – range and mode
  • Revision of all multiplication facts including division.

World Around Us 

The main topic to be covered this term will be

  • Ireland

Children should be encouraged to carry out personal research for information which may be useful to the topic.

P.E.

Full P.E. kit is required and should be brought to school on Monday and left on the premises until Friday when it can be taken home for cleaning.  This term, we will have swimming lessons on Thursday and P.E on Friday.

 

Other information.

Jewellery – for Health and Safety reasons the only jewellery allowed to be worn by children is a watch and this must be removed for all P.E. activities.

Water – we recommend that children bring a bottle of water to school each day to drink during class. A bottle with a pull up sports cap is recommended.

Homework – all homework activities must be checked by a parent or guardian each night.
